Broadband Information

The main types of broadband available in the UK are ADSL and Cable broadband.

ADSL Broadband (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line)

With ADSL broadband, the speed you receive depends on your line stats (Attenuation - Noise on line: this is higher the further you are from the phone exchange). (SNR Margin - Signal to noise ratio: when this is either too high or too low loss of sync can occur).

SDSL Broadband (Symetric Digital Subscriber Line)

The same downstream as what you would get on the same ADSL broadband but the upload speed is the same as the download speed. The problem is not just the cost involved but a lot of exchanges that support IP stream ADSL max do not support SDSL.

Cable Broadband

Cable broadband is generally only available in urban areas but the speed advantages are extreme over ADSL. Some places have trials for 100Mb/s and could be available fully by the end of 2010. Virgin currently offer 10Mb/s, 20MB/s and 50MB/s Cable broadband.

Cable broadband generally has a much greater upload rate than ADSL connections.
